Digital Learning Tools

I found a great text about Digital tools, enjoy it!

Having the right educational tools can make the difference between a student's understanding and confusion regarding the subject matter. Textbooks have long been the foundation for learning, but they are no longer sufficient in this technological world. Digital learning tools engage and motivate learners while helping teachers become more effective in the classroom. These tools have positively infiltrated all subject areas. There are many popular digital learning options in today's market.

Interactive Boards

  • Interactive boards like the "Smart Board" are replacing traditional white boards. Teachers can present websites and software programs to their students on interactive boards. Boys and girls who are absent can view recorded instruction when they return to school via the interactive device. This feature works well for students who are struggling and those who require repetition.

Assignment and Assessment Solutions

  • McGraw Hill Publishing Company has created a system called "Connect." This is the wave of the future. It is multifaceted, benefiting teachers and students alike. Using it, students can take diagnostic and practice tests and receive immediate feedback. Teachers' Power Point presentations and lectures are available in a click. Students don't have to worry about taking lots of notes, as they can access those later from mobile devices such as iPods.

Netbooks

  • Many school districts are incorporating netbooks---small laptops---in an effort to enhance technology. Nebraska's North Platte public schools reached a three to one ratio of computers to students at the end of 2010. Students use these small computers to create presentations, art and brochures. They are integrated into all subject areas. Netbooks bring the outside in, opening students up to the global world.

Graphing Calculators

  • Graphing calculators are used by students in math and science classrooms. Students are able to plot graphs, solve equations and work with variables. The calculators are programmable so instructors can customize activities. These calculators can also be hooked up to devices such as thermometers and weather instruments for data collection.

Online Educational Games

  • Students never need to be bored learning mundane skills. Interactive games in English, math, science, social studies, languages---any subject you can imagine---are available at the click of a mouse. Immediate feedback is given and tutorials generally accompany the games. Companies such as Scholastic feature various subject areas in one location. Students can compete with others around the world in online competitions such as World Maths Day.

eBooks

  • eBooks have not taken hold in classrooms as quickly as other technological devices. That is changing, however, as teachers become more comfortable with them. Companies are designing eBooks to be more interactive and functional, thus engaging learners. eBooks are expected to grow in popularity by the end of 2012
